How dog age actually works
The "multiply by seven" rule fails in two directions at once. It badly understates how fast dogs mature — a twelve-month-old dog is not a seven-year-old child, it is an adolescent capable of reproducing — and it ignores the one variable that matters most after maturity, which is body size.
The first two years are front-loaded
Most of a dog's ageing happens early. Year one covers infancy, childhood and adolescence, and lands a dog somewhere around fifteen in human terms. Year two adds roughly another nine. From there the pace settles into a steadier annual increment — and that increment is where size takes over.

Read across any row and the divergence is stark. At ten years old, a terrier is a comfortable fifty-something while a Great Dane is pushing eighty. Same decade, entirely different animal.
The size paradox
Across the animal kingdom, larger species live longer — elephants outlast mice by decades. Within dogs, the rule inverts. The current explanation points at growth rate: giant breeds pack a five-thousand-fold increase in body mass into their first year, and the elevated growth-factor signalling that requires appears to accelerate cellular ageing and raise cancer risk. The trade-off shows up in every dimension of ageing at once — joints, heart, and lifespan.
The epigenetic formula
A 2020 study took a different route entirely, comparing patterns of DNA methylation — chemical tags that accumulate on the genome with age — between dogs and humans, and fitting a curve to the correspondence:

Its blind spot is size: the dogs studied were Labrador Retrievers, so the formula returns one answer regardless of whether the dog is four kilos or seventy. What to do with the number
The useful part is not the human-years figure itself but the life stage it implies. Once a dog crosses into its senior years, the standard recommendation shifts to twice-yearly veterinary check-ups with baseline bloodwork, because the conditions that show up then — kidney disease, heart disease, arthritis, dental disease — are all far easier to manage when caught early. Weight matters more than almost anything else you control: dogs kept lean throughout life have been shown to live meaningfully longer than overweight littermates, which makes weight management a longevity intervention rather than a cosmetic one.

- Is one dog year really seven human years?
- No — it is a rule of thumb from the 1950s that survives because it is easy to remember, not because it is accurate. It gets the first two years badly wrong: a one-year-old dog is sexually mature and physically close to adult size, which is nothing like a seven-year-old child. It also ignores size, and size is the single biggest factor in how fast a dog ages. A Great Dane at seven is an old dog; a Chihuahua at seven is barely middle-aged.
- Why do large dogs age faster than small ones?
- It is one of the odder findings in animal biology, because across species the pattern is the opposite — bigger animals normally live longer. Within a species, dogs included, larger individuals live shorter lives.
